What will you be doing when the world is coming to an end?
Well, some might say that you should not be reading stuff on the web. Especially the reasons why I design the way I do.
My design ethic is very very simple.
No, that's it. Keep is simple. No Flash (although I do use it on one or two of my pages), no Javascript (at least none that
will break your broswer if you have Java turned off), no Java applets (at least none that are a forced download), no excessive
graphics or embedded audio (so there isn't sillily long download times) and make everything viewable by any
browser under the sun, including Lynx.
I like a minimalist feel, which doesn`t mean to say I won`t use spectacularly garish colours if I have to, or even want
to, but I do like using sans-serif fonts. Sometimes I`ll forget that Netscape doesn`t support style sheets very well and will
have a <style> tag in the header & forget to add <font> tags
to the text, but even when I do that the text is still readable, albeit not quite as pretty.
I like the title/leftmenu/maincontent layout because I think it is the most efficient use of space (or "real estate", as
some designers call it). It allows for changes to be done quickly and easily without necessarily changing every document in
the heirarchy. It means you can change the whole flavour of the website without once editing your primary content pages. Don't forget, these are all done in PHP, so I can make critical changes by editing just one file.
I don`t like using large graphics or huge amounts of images. I believe in content over style - but at the same time you can
make the content stylish if you are competent enough. Don`t be lazy. This is how I design webpages. |
